Polini Big Evolution Muffler Limited Edition
Polini Big Evolution Muffler Limited Edition

Polini recently announced an exhaust matching their Big Evo 70cc cylinder kit. Surprisingly this is the first official exhaust by Polini for the Big Evo 70cc cylinder kit series so why does Polini announce it as a “Limited Edition”? Read more about it after the click…

The Big Evolution Muffler is completely hand made in Italy. Unlike earlier models  of the Evolution series it now features a “pro” design using different sized cones that define the exhaust manifold. This design is known and used by Stage6 on their R/T exhausts and Yasuni on the C21 and other exhausts. Shaping the manifold from multiple cones requires much more time and accuracy in welding and is therefore also more expensive. Especially when producing in the European Union where time equals money more than in China. The cost for this “sexy” look and increased performance can be noticed in the price at 570Euros +Vat!

Besides matching the timings of the Big Evo 70cc cylinder kit is also is compatible with the Torsen WD swing arm (a huge unique selling point for Polini).

Here’s the official press release:

BIG EVOLUTION MUFFLER LIMITED EDITION

The “BIG EVOLUTION LIMITED EDITION” exhaust system has been developed to achieve the maximum performance and exploit power of the Piaggio engines equipped with Ø 47,6 Big Evolution cylinders, displacement 70cc.

The main technical features are:

  • Exhaust manifold flange with 3 holes to couple perfectly with the new cylinder and avoid possible gas escaping and power loss.
  • The manifold has been connected with a turned pipe. The form is like the Polini cylinder exhaust to achieve the Venturi effect and improve the quantity of the gas scavenging and consequently favoring the power increase up to 14.000 rpm.
  • The expansion is completely hand-made and it has 17 cones. The visual look has been studied to have the maximum yield with the TORSEN WD
  • The silencer curve can be disassembled; it is possible to insert nozzles of different diameters to increase the engine revolutions.
  • The silencer, made of black anodized aluminum has a larger outside diameter which improves the performance. The base is detachable to change the deadening material.

This muffler, born for competition use only, is completely hand-made and it is not painted for a better heat dissipation. It has a special rust-proofing oil that must be regenerated after its use to maintain the muffler in good conditions.

All these features improve the general engine performance; both in acceleration and in speed, for a fun drive at all the circuits.

Why make it a limited edition?

If you were following Polini’s product lineup closely you will have noticed that Polini’s product portfolio currently serves the high end/pro racing market with two cylinder kits, the Evolution 3 70cc as well as the Big Evolution 70cc (sometimes referred to as Evo4). The Big Evolution was introduced based on a new cylinder mould design that allowed Polini to create a big bore cylinder kit in 84cc and 94cc. Along with the cylinder kit Polini also made an exhaust available, the Polini Big Evolution 84/94cc Muffler.

Using the “Big Bore” mould Polini also released a 70cc cylinder kit version. There was however no matching muffler available and you had to go with the model made for the Evolution 3 if you want to stick with Polini products. From a marketing standpoint it is now surprising that Polini brings a dedicated muffler for the Big Evo 70cc cylinder kit, but makes it only available in a limited edition.

If I understand this strategy correct I assume that Polini will discontinue the Evolution 3 cylinder kits soon and with it the Evo 3 exhaust range (despite the Evo3 exhaust for Minarelli was only announced a few weeks ago). Therefore Polini wants to draw attention to the Big Evo range by making the muffler a limited edition for now. With the exhaust available it is likely that some teams switch to the 70cc Big Evo cylinder kit (most are still on the Evo3 nowadays) and get used to its characteristics (different moulds show different thermal characteristics) right in time for the 2013 season. Let’s see what else 2013 brings we wish Polini good luck!
