The Ultimate Scooter Tuning Exhaust Test (70cc Sport)

The racing muffler is probably one of the most popular pieces of tuning no matter if you are looking at cars, motorbikes or scooters. It is also (at least for scooters) a relatively inexpensive way to really gain horse power and speed. On top of that the manufacturers have noticed that exhausts sell even better when they are homologated (this means legal to use on the street) using various performance restrictions. It is therefore perfectly legal to replace your stock exhaust with a racing exhaust if it comes with an ECE homologation.

As there are more and more exhausts available on the market our friends at Streetbuzz went through a total of 26 exhausts to find out which one is the king of the streets. Welcome to the Scooter Tuning Exhaust Test 2013!

The Source

As mentioned above the source for the scooter tuning exhaust test results was a German print magazine called Streetbuzz. Unfortunately they shut their doors after the release of the 9th mag in 2010. However, thanks to the internet and chief editor Mr.Hood all mags are still available for free online here. Those test represent the outcome of the Streetbuzz mag. I gave my twist to the data sheets and added the knowledge I have about the tested exhausts.

The Setup

In order to recreate a common street racing setup the Yamaha Aerox with a liquid cooled Minarelli engine was already equipped with a Stage6 Steetrace cylinder kit, a 17,5mm Motorforce carburetor and an unrestricted intake manifold. All other components have been kept stock (including variator rollers and clutch springs). At a retail price of about 200€ the above mentioned parts are great street setup and make a perfect daily rider.

Restrictions

All exhaust with a street legal homologation are getting shipped with certain restrictions to affect the performance (and therefore make them legal to use). It is not uncommon that the exhaust with the restrictions run even worse than the original exhaust. You should therefore remove all restrictions before installing the exhaust. Be aware that when removing the restriction you technically loose the street legal homologation (you can still keep the paper to show the police :)).
Removing the restriction is an easy task similar to removing the restriction of a stock exhaust. Look out for dummy pipes or flow reductions and get rid of them. For the scooter tuning exhaust test all restrictions have been removed!

LeoVince Touring

The cheapest tuning exhaust in the test also delivers the lowest performance. Clearly targeted as a replacement for the original exhaust this is a cheap alternative with a small power gain and homologation for street use.

Metrakit Handmade Ecologic

Nothing much to say about the Metrakit. It delivers a good power band but maximum hp is a bit on the low side. Probably better suited for the stock cylinder kit. 8.7hp / 8.6Nm / 120€

Tecnigas Next-R

This exhaust is a legend. Out there for more than ten years it is together with the LeoVince ZX probably one of the most sold exhaust in the scooter scene. At 115€ and 9.6 max horsepower you can't go wrong with this one. It also runs excellent on stock cylinder kits! 9.6hp / 8.5Nm / 115€

Laser X-Pro

Very similar performance to the Tecnigas but more expensive and a slightly lower torque. I'd prefer the Tecnigas. 9.6hp / 8.3Nm / 150€

Yasuni Z

Also a very popular exhaust with a great quality coming from Spain. Definitely not a bad choice and a great performer on stock cylinder kits. 9.8hp / 8.6Nm / 150€

Polini Scooter Team

A bit on the expensive side but with lots of torque and the great Polini sound (the only still available legal Polini exhaust on the market). 9.5hp / 9.1Nm / 160€

LeoVince Handmade ZX

The other legend in the test. Also made for ages, excellent fitting quality, rusts within seconds and has a lot of haters. Nonetheless a very good result at 125€. This is the muffler the average dealer will try to sell you... margins must be huge :) 10.0hp / 9.0Nm / 125€

Tecnigas Tek

A bit on the ugly side but with one of the best performances in the homologated range of exhaust. Dead cheap as well! 10.1hp / 8.8Nm / 100€

Hebo New Performer

Lots of power and heaps of torque at a relatively high price. 10.5hp / 9.0Nm / 160€

Stage6 Pro Replica

Given the tests at Streetbuzz were correct this one is the prize performance winner of the test. 125€ for 10.5hp can't be beaten. You can pick this one up on eBay for less than 50€ by the way... 10.5hp / ? / 125€

LeoVince Handmade GP

Rather poor performance of this newer LeoVince exhaust. I have also not yet met anyone who thinks it looks cool... 8.7hp / 8.6Nm / 150€

Malossi MHR Replica

Malossi, the other big player, also has a homologated exhaust. The MHR Replica delivers decent power at a very high price for its class... Only for you if you really need the homologation and desperately want a Malossi exhaust. 9.9hp / 8.9Nm / 220€

Tecnigas Trek

The third Tecnigas model in the test delivers a similar performance to Tek. Given the name I'm not surprised... But still, Tecnigas can you please ask someone else to come up with a name for your products they are by far he lamest amongst them all. 10.0hp / 8.6Nm / 100€

Artek K1

Unfortunately out of production and only available second hand. Still a good exhaust and good for everyone who does not want to ride another Aerox with Stage6 exhaust. 10.1hp / 8.8Nm / N/A

Yasuni R

Slowly moving into the 70cc muffler region, the Yasuni R delivers an excellent performance at a high price. However it's homologated and definitely something your friends will be jealous about. 10.3hp / 8.8Nm / 200€

Stage6 Pro

The Stage6 Pro is the first non homologated exhaust in the test. This means when the cops stop you, you don't have nothing to show them that the exhaust is legal. Comparing the results with the Pro Replica I'd suggest to go with the Replica as it's cheaper and homologated. Nonetheless the Pro has the highest torque amongst all tested exhaust and is believed to perform REALLY well on the Stage6 Sport Pro cylinder kits. 10.6hp / 9.4Nm / 170€

Tecnigas RS II

This exhaust is a dedicated 70cc exhaust by Tecnigas. Unfortunately the performance results were not as expected. Given the setup this is probably one of the worst choices to be made. 9.5hp / 8.6Nm / 150€

Polini For Race 3

This exhaust is a legend (I still own one of the first generation models) known for huge torque it disappoints a bit in this test. Power output however is high and at 280€ definitely one of the exclusive exhausts in the test. 10.4hp / 9.1Nm / 280€

TopPerformances Nardo

Unfortunately out of production but it used to be the choice for all TopPerformances Minarelli tuners out here. Due Plus is the cylinder this exhaust is meant to be used with. You can still pick up a homologated Replica version at 200€ nowadays. Great looks too. 10.6hp / 9.0Nm / N/A

Stage6 R1200

The R1200 is the weapon of choice for most Mid Race setup nowadays. In combination with the Stage6 Racing more than 15hp are possible. Not cheap at 250€ but with great looks and a great quality. 10.9hp / 8.5Nm / 250€

Yasuni C16 Kevlar

The winner of the test comes from Spain and offer incredible 11hp and 9.996rpm. Not cheap at 250€ but a real racing exhaust with great and exclusive looks. There is also a homologated City version available which however does not perform equally well. 11.0hp / 8.8Nm / 250€

Conclusion

I ultimately decided to choose a winner in two categories for the scooter tuning exhaust test. One is the overall winner based on overall performance and the second prize is given to the price-performance winner. Please keep in mind that performance might vary a lot depending on the components you use. The scooter tuning exhaust test winners might perform great on the tested engine and cylinder kit, running another cylinder kit however might give you completely different results. Always make sure to setup your carburator and adjust the variomatic rollers to get most out of your exhaust!

Scooter Tuning Exhaust Test Overall Performance Winner

The overall performance winner of the scooter tuning exhaust test is the Yasuni C16 Kevlar. It is not the cheapest exhaust in the test and it only slightly outperforms other exhaust but tuning is about max power and this is what the Yasuni brings to the table.

Scooter Tuning Exhaust Test Price-Performance Winner

The scooter tuning exhaust test price-performance winner award goes to the Stage6 Pro Replica. I find this exhaust has a great build quality, excellent performance and comes at an unbeatable price. You can't go wrong with this exhaust you might however see it a lot around your neighborhood. Still, its never wrong to have the best piece of equipment and if everyone else has it it can't be all that wrong can it...?

Great article! When you say homologated, are the results with the restrictor washer removed or kept in place?

Hi Carsten,
All tests were done with removed restrictors. This will of course compromise the homologation. Keeping the restrictors in place usually results in a horrible performance as the exhaust are designed to be used without restrictors and the restrictor is only applied to achieve homologation.

Hello Daniel, a really interesting aritcle. So good i read every single word of it BUT you seem to have mixed up something:
The graph, the RPM with the most power and even the torque is identical between the Hebo New Performer and your price-performance winner the Stage 6 Pro Replica.
I was wondering if the mufflers are that similiar but after reading the text below the Stage 6 Pro Replica i am pretty sure you accidentally copied everything from the Hebo New Performer and pasted it in the performance graph and even the text of the Stage 6 Pro Replica.
Below the Stage 6 Pro Replica graph and text it clearly says "streetbuzz nitro hebo racing" just like in the description of the Hebo muffler.
Sorry for my bad english but i had just some years of english lessons at school.
After a new overview, what is the S6 Pro Rep really about ???

Yes, unfortunately Streetbuzz fucked it up and posted the wrong datasheet. They later had a screen of the correct one but it was only possible to read the horsepower and not the torque. The Pro Replica is indeed really good! I would recommend it any day also because of the high quality and fitting Stage6 provides!

Indeed. The Yasuni City 16 can be used on sport 70cc engines and gives also quite high revenue on stock 50cc cylinder kits. The Yasuni R is better suited for stock 50cc engines.

I'd go with the Next R. The LeoVinces are horrible and the RSII performs equally good as the Next on the smaller Malossis but is more expensive!

Not sure if the Aerox 100 has a restricted CDI but yes, the BWs has the same engine (only AC tho) Your Aerox 100 is LC, right? Should still work tho.

I bought the tecnigas next R and I'm disappointed, because the results was quite the opposite from what I expected it didn't gave any power instead lost power from take-off and top end and the engine sounds slow. any ideas what should I do?
my current set is:

1)Taiwan 120cc cylinder kit
2)Malossi double sponge on original air box
3)Malossi reed block with that thing (I don't know what is called... lol) that makes the hole from square to circle installed
4)Standard carburetor with main jet 80 (standard jet 74)
5)Malossi multivar variator kit with 9.3gr rollers and white contra spring
6)Malossi belt
7)Naraku clutch

Hi Petros,
The problems you see are due to the heavy rollers. Try something around 5grams. Also get one of those test sets from Stage6 or Polini and try different weights until you found an optimal setup. Acceleration from stand still, as well as out of corner acceleration needs to be tested!

Great article, very interesting. I'm stuck; I have a stock Piaggio Typhoon 80 and am looking for a decent exhaust that fits. Stacks of options for the 50 and 125 but nothing listed for the 80. I've read that a decent 70cc compatible exhaust would be ok but not sure if the connection to the cylinder port is the same. Any info appreciated! Current thinking is the Yasuni Z may be way to go. Hi Neil,
I've never seen the 80cc Piaggio engine but I read a bit about it. Apparently it is just a 50cc engine which has been slightly modified. Thus feel free to use any 50cc exhaust! I'd suggest the Stage6 PRO or the Yasuni C16.

Many thanks for your recommendations, I've had the bike 15 years and restored it like new and the exhaust will be the icing on the cake so to speak. I reckon there's a lot of untapped potential in the engine (new cylinder etc this year) and the Yasnsui C16 does sound the part -- there's a city version too which means I can keep the centre stand so will go for that. Will report back with the results in due course!

Good luck with it! If you want some free extra HP you should consider flowing the case. I assume you have a Minarelli Engine. I have a 08' Zuma 50 with a Top Performance Black 70cc BBK. I have the stock 10mm crank and I'm looking for a pipe that doesn't rev super high as I don't want to destroy my stock crank. Also... I had a Leo Vince ZX-R and it was damaged. I'm looking to replace it with something else. I want max performance but don't want to blow the 10mm crank.

Stage6 Pro Replica is fine. The Stage6 PRO (non rep version) might be questionable but still I'd say it will work out. You might consider installing a longer transmission tho, or go a bit heavier on the rollers!

Ich fahre ein mbk nitro wassergekühlt. Mein set up: 70ccm stage6 streetrace, 21 dellorto Vergaser, malossi multivar vario und malossi Delta clutch Kupplung. Stage6 einlasssystem USW. Jetzt zur meiner Frage, würde der stage6 r1200 gut laufen oder eher ein anderer? Momentan fahre ich denn yasuni R.

Hi René,
R1200 will work well, tho you could consider upgrading from the street race to the Sport Pro MK2. You'd get a lot of torque then! Another great option for the Street Race is the Stage PRO (non Replica), tho it's a bit hard to find these days.

Unfortunately I don't have any details on the Giannelli exhaust, tho back in the days the exhausts where really good. Giannelli knows what they're doing, kind of like Yasuni. My estimate would be a performance similar to the Yasuni R or the Stage6 6 PRO.

I have a 05 zuma with malossi sport 70 kit. have a 17.5 dellorto carb stock air box and a brand new pro replica pipe. I cant get this thing to rev up with any power so I changed the pipe to my leo zx and it just rips. I then took the pro replica and put it on my stock 50 and it does the same thing no power. any idea what might be the problem with the pipe? I did remove the header funnel in it
any help would be great

Hey Dave,
This sounds strange. My guess would be that it is still restricted, but you said you removed the restriction... Have you installed lighter vario rollers? Try to put the scoot onto the main stand so the rear wheel can spin freely. Does it rev up then? Also try going down a hill and see if at some point it start reving up quickly. If it does, then the vario rollers are too heavy for the setup, if not then there's something wrong with it. Try riding it without the end-silencer. It will be loud, but you can make sure that there's no restriction in the silencer at least.

first you rock with helping people out!!
ok I have my 70 set up tuned perfect to my leo zx. it is rusted and welded a few times thus replacing with the pro rep. on the stand it will rev up but just doesn't sound crisp. I can jet and needle adjust real crazy and doesn't seem to change much. with the leo on I have 5 gram sliders in koso clutch and it screams up to 45 and gets there quickly. I put 4 gram rollers and still nothing with the pro rep pipe. is there something inside that might have been bad from new?

It sure sounds strange. Do you have by any chance another scooter you could attach the Stage6 to? It really sounds weird what you're describing. I double checked and the only restriction applied to the S6 Rep's is the funnel inside of the down pipe. If you've removed that it should just blow through...
Needle adjustment shouldn't matter much in that case, only the jet or the rollers can have such a dramatic effect on performance. What jet do you have currently installed and which carb (stock 12mm?)?

I am running a 90 main in a dellorto 17.5. I have 5 gram sliders in koso clutch,with stock variator spring. if I have on a stand it will rev up but takes a while to do so. little afraid to rev up as it sounds fast spinning and afraid to blow crank. will I have problems with crank thinking of putting lighter weights in ?
just doesn't seem to want to run right. if I put it on my 50cc stock zuma does the exact same thing

Hi Dave,
90 on a 17.5 sounds perfect! So, I'm certain it's the 5 gram weights. This actually seems heavy. You seem to confuse variator and clutch :) The variator is the thing at the front with the rollers in it. The clutch is in the back and has the spring (along with the rear pulley which also has a spring in it).
Try 3.5G and 4G roller weights for the variator. Don't worry about the crankshaft unless you install a higher powered cylinder kit, there is not much to worry about. (Edit: Just saw that you run a 70cc cylinder kit. Which kit is it? if it's a Sport Cylinder you are ok, tho if it's something like the Stage6 Racing MK2 you should consider swapping the crankshaft!) I'm certain with lighter weights you will be amazed how good the exhaust performs! You can the consider installing stronger clutch springs to improve acceleration from standing.

I have a stage6 race mk1 70cc kit with an athena upgraded crank, 21mm dellorto 90/45/w7, stage6 torque control with red clutch spring at max tension. the scooter launches at 8000 and it rips hard.

anything below 8000 it's a snail. my leo vince zx-r has tons of power from idle to 8000, but nothing after 8000.

i can't commute with the city16 since it can't go slow :( any help?

It's the variator rollers. They are too heavy, that's why it won't rev up! The Leo ZX is a piece of crap and doesn't work with 70cc cylinders, that's why it has no power above 8000rpm. You need to install lighter variator rollers for the Yasuni!

Hi Joe,
It's really comes down to the engine response. When you accelerate out of a corner, does it rev up quickly or are you underreved and it takes a while to accelerate properly again. If yes, then you need to lower the weights!

HI Daniel - I have a 2011 zip sp de-restricted and have just changed my exhaust to a Leo Vince ZX . .can you suggest a set up to use as all the power is at the top end , just takes an age for the rev's to get there . .really want it to set off a lot quicker . .and any thing else you think i should consider . .

Awesome! Zip SP's are dope! I have one myself back in Germany! The problem you see is due to too heavy vario rollers. Get some lighter ones, maybe 1-1.5 grams and you will notice a big difference. Ultimately the LeoVince exhaust are pretty shitty unfortunately. If you want to get a 70cc kit I'd recommend also trading in the exhaust for something more capable (Yasuni, or Stage6).

No problem. Let me know about the results, it will surely be great :) Make sure to use loctite (medium strength) on the variator screw tho and ideally get a torque wrench! Also make sure to not look the belt in between the vario plates. Once it's assembled press the belt together so it loosesns and recheck the torque of the screw!

Mhm, no sorry. But the Malossi MHR Pipe as well as the PM ones are the only worth mentioning. There are some smaller companies that also do custom builts for the big engines, but they are hard to find. Hope this helps!

Hi!
Is there is also a muffler restrictor in a Turbo Kit pipe set? Or is it just a noise-killer..
The restrictor at the manifold is removed and I noticed a small pipe going in to the perforated chamber in the muffler when i re-stuffed it.

Hi Robert,
Good question. Can you take a photo of it? I know leoVince had some weird things in their exhausts. but this was mostly because the exhaust should look like a racing exhaust whilst it actually is a sport exhaust for stock cylinder kits. So what they did was put all kinds of BS inside the silencer and exhaust chamber to make it work on stock engines....

Daniel, not sure if this is still active, but BIG kudos for doing this work. This kind of information is really valuable, and I know It took alot of time. I have a dynomometer myself and I am aware of the labor! Anyways I picked up a 00 aprilia sr50 with top perf pipe, bore, and dell 19mm/stage6 vari kit. I can't get it to run with any less than 3/4 throttle input. Once I get the revs up its fine, but when going from idle up, it cuts out completely. Im running 90mj, 45pilot, 60 choke. I have heard the needle position is huge on these, does that sound like my issue? Its an absolute rocket once I can nurse it past the dead zone.

About your problem. it's intersting. Usually the stock setups for pilot and needle are fine and only the mainjet needs adjustment. Theres two screws on the carb one for the air fuel mixture in idle and the idle speed screw. Try to work these a bit. Also what air filter are you using? If it's a racing one, try to hook up the stock airfilter. They are way easier to setup to start with!

Go with the Stage6 Sport Pro MK2 and it will make you fly! Tecnigas Next R is ok if you need the ABE, otherwise get a Stage6 Replica or Yasuni if you have the money.

Polini blue springs on the original clutch

Is this a good setup or maybe have to heavy rollers ?
Have look the clutch no signs of blue marks off overheating and the clutch looks good.

The rollers sound very heavy! How is the acceleration out of corners? Must be quite sluggish. In my experience I always used around 3.5g with the Polini Variators to get good results!
Also, the main jet sounds very big! Is it running well?

Hey Daniel....about to add working silencer and muffler to Yama Aerox YQ50 (2003) will the Stage6 Pro Replica do the job .....original muffler kit makes so much noise!!
